Unit Title: Perform Biological Techniques
Unit Code: [0511 451 09A]
Level: Level 5
Duration: [180 hours]
Module: One
Year: 2025
Curriculum Type: Modularized CBET (Competency-Based Education and Training)
Unit Description:
This unit equips the learner with practical and theoretical competencies required to conduct essential biological techniques within laboratory and field environments. The focus is on equipping trainees with skills aligned to industry practices in biological research, education, and applied biosciences.
The learner will gain competence in performing cytological and food tests, applying microbiological procedures, handling and caring for laboratory animals, preparing and preserving plant specimens using herbarium techniques, and conducting museum specimen preservation. Additionally, the unit provides hands-on experience in conducting ecological experiments to assess interactions between organisms and their environment.
Throughout the unit, emphasis is placed on observation, precision, ethical considerations, safety, and proper documentation in both laboratory and field settings.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit, the learner will be able to:
-
Perform cytological tests for observing cell structure and behavior.
-
Perform food tests to identify major food nutrients.
-
Carry out microbiological techniques such as staining, culturing, and aseptic procedures.
-
Care for laboratory animals following ethical and safety guidelines.
-
Carry out herbarium techniques for plant specimen preservation and documentation.
-
Carry out museum techniques for preparation and preservation of biological specimens.
-
Conduct ecological experiments to study biotic and abiotic interactions in natural habitats.
Learning Approach:
-
Mode: Competency-Based, Practical-Oriented
-
Delivery: Laboratory demonstrations, fieldwork, group work, individual projects
-
Assessment: Continuous Assessment Tasks (CATs), Practical Tests, Portfolio of Evidence, and Summative Assessment
